The Studios of Cocoa Beach continues its series of mini solo exhibitions with ceramic art by Katie Morrissey. You can view the exhibition the entire month of April at the gallery, 165 Minuteman Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach
Katie has been working with tile for over 21 years. And while she often uses found items in her work, she mainly creates and modifies ceramic tile. Adding art work and firing them in a kiln creates individual small works of art. Katie then sorts thru her multi-ton library of tiles and compose a piece: She experiments with installation, carpentry, and metal work resulting in a wide variety of creations including tabletops, back splashes, or even a free-form constellation on industrial aluminum.
Her “Rocket Table Two” includes vintage tile, handcut ceramic tile, handmade oak tile, commercial tile, modified commercial tile, salvaged glass tile, Swarovski crystalss , and cultured pearls.
Katie says, ”I never tire of this art and the craft it requires. , I have learned a bag full of ceramics tricks and methods. I push myself to master the ‘non-tile’ side as well, so I can control the entire process. I also experiment with ceramics chemistry to get the results I want. There is always something more to try.”
The Studios of Cocoa Beach is a non-profit gallery, home to 35 local artists working in a variety of mediums. The Studios is open most days Wednesday through Sunday and by appointment. Please visit, www.studiosofcocoabeach.org to confirm hours and for more information on all the Studios artists.
